Polystyrene foam is one of the products of petrochemical industry and its appearance is made up of fine crystals which expands in the presence of pressure and vapor. Because of the closed cell structure in polystyrene ionolite blocks, it has a good water resistance and also against corrupting and growing bacteria.
Polystyrene ceiling blocks are widely used in the building industry today. These blocks increase the stability of the structure against earthquakes by reducing the dead load of the roof of 200 kg / m 2 and also prevent the loss of energy as a result of sound insulation, heat insulation and moisture in the building. Polystyrene monolithic blocks in two types of “flammable” and “non-flammable” have long been welcomed by mass makers for construction in the country and in high-rise apartments because of its low lightness and low cost.
The expanded polystyrene foam production consists of three steps. In the first step, polystyrene beads containing the puffer agent enter a vertical tank equipped with a steam mixer and vaporizer. This step is called pre-expansion, and at this stage the final density of the foam is determined. Expanded seeds at this stage are called prepuff with a volume up to 40 times before expansion. The seeds are kept in open containers for several hours in this container until the vacuum created inside the grains reaches the equilibrium with the atmosphere. After the pressure stabilization stage, the initial puffed beads are poured into a closed mold and placed again under steam heat. At this stage, prepuff beads penetrate each other and create a molding piece.
